RUNWAY LIGHTING

Bsml.
Have you wonder how the pilots move or maneuver on ground on runway during night?
Even they installed landing light or head light on the aircraft, this will be hard for them to taxiing the aircraft without having any guidance or reference. It also almost similiar when we driving at night. With the light aid it can help a lot for the pilot to maneuver.Normally we'll look at the road markings like edge of the road So it really important for every pilot to know runway signs and markings.
But in this post i'd like to share about runway lightings only.
So it comes in late 1930, runway lightings appeared in cleveland hopkins international airportKLCE at North America.

After that it comes to International Civil Aviation Organisation(ICAO) all runway operated at night must be fitted with the minimum runway lightings to ensure aircraft safety whenever their coming for landing, takeoff and for ground movement.

can u imagine if this light all of sudden switch off during your approach??
-go around or gamble??haha or struggling to see the centre line??

As shown on the pictures i've taken from several websites they are most about the same.
Approach lightings, treshold lightings, runway edge lighting and papi light.

Do you know how threshold light is looks like??What colour is it??
End of the runway light? Runway edge light??

Here

Threshold Lights
Threshold lights is basically consist of two colours.green and red
When an aircraft coming to land you'll see green colour.
But if you on the runway you'll see red colour.
This lights is very important because it help every pilot to recognized start and end of runway.

Approach lights system(ALS)
Basically it help pilot during transition from instrument flying to visual flying.
Runway End Identifications Lights
It's a identification an aircraft is about above the runway

Touchdown Zone Lighting(TDZL)
Means portion of area for the touchdown. It's two row of transverse white light bars along both side of centre line.

Taxi way Light
centre line light could be yellow or green in colour
while taxiway edge normally will be blue colour

PAPI light
its provide visual indication to pilot to positon aircraft vertically or at the correct path with reference to glideslope of the runway by looking at light that appeared. PAPI
two red and two white-indicate aircraft at the correct path
more than two red-indicate aircraft is very low
more than two white-indicate aircraft is very high
Its help pilot to make correction earlier.
Have you heared about FAROS system??
its corporate with PAPI lights which is it give a signal to an approaching aircraft runway is occupied and immediate action go around must take place.
Final Approach Runway Occupancy Signal(FAROS)
Papi lights will flashing to indicate runway is occupied.
